Rokunen Yonkumi

Japan Travelogue: Rokunen Yonkumi

Just opposite the JR East exit of Shinjuku Station, and directly above The Lockup, lies Rokunen Yonkumi. This cozy izakaya charmingly replicates a 6th-grade elementary school classroom, where patrons become honorary members of Class 4. Even if you aren’t familiar with Japanese elementary schools, the authentic school ambiance is unmistakable, complete with blackboards, miniature chairs, a display of world flags, and rows of randoseru bags, will easily transporting you back to elementary days.

After getting settled at your table, you can peruse the menu cleverly presented as an attendance book book, showcasing an enticing fusion of standard izakaya dishes and nostalgic school-inspired food, with visual aids to entice you. Savor beverages served in science kits and indulge in a whiskey coke with popping candy, evoking fond memories of school days. The izakaya’s unpretentious charm enhances the overall experience, channeling the delightful nostalgia of being back in school.

Each guest must order a drink and two food plates. The experience is made even more enjoyable with clever touches, such as syringes filled with dressing for salads and a self-serve pot of edamame. If you need to get away from the pressures of adulthood and relive the carefree days of elementary school, Rokunen Yonkumi is the place to be!
