The countryside of Japan is very beautiful.

Huyenvi from Summer Short 2019

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I enjoyed the excursions offered to summer short term students such as our trip to Yamanashi Prefecture. It was nice seeing another side of Japan outside of Tokyo. The countryside of Japan is very beautiful and I appreciated the fact that KCP took the time to organize these trips for the students. Peach picking and visiting Erin-ji were relaxing experiences that I enjoyed.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

The most productive and interesting aspects of the program for me were being able to live in Tokyo. Being able to live my daily life in Tokyo accelerated my Japanese language skills as well as get used to Japanese culture and society.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

I enjoyed the small group sessions and having different teachers each day. Working with a partner made learning feel less scary. As a shyer person, I felt more comfortable when I was paired with someone and we had to work together on our class assignments. I actually enjoyed taking tests every day. I felt that it accelerated my learning and forced me to learn quicker.

Anything you especially liked in the living arrangements? Any problems you experienced?

I liked the location. There were a lot of stores and restaurants nearby. Kasai Station was also very convenient and close to Trusty Kasai. Trusty Kasai was very conveniently located but the building itself was restricting. We were not allowed to have visitors, we could not use the dining hall on the first floor to do anything, therefore no access to the microwave there. We were not allowed to study in that room as well. We also had to pay for the meals she would cook for us and the price of our living arrangement was already very expensive. It was nice to live in an apartment by myself but I would not mind living in something like a sharehouse as a summer short term student.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

I would recommend that new KCP students take advantage of living in Japan. Interacting with Japanese people while being engaged with Japanese culture will make their time in Japan much more enjoyable and valuable.

Testimonials

I wanted to be in a major city in Japan and learn Japanese, and this program had good reviews online in addition to being affiliated with several universities that I knew of. There was also a decent amount of information available online from non-official sources, which gave me good information on living arrangements and general life as a student.
